The mission of 412 Food Rescue is to prevent perfectly good food from entering the waste stream.

All that they do and believe in is to solve hunger and malnutrition by eliminating the root cause: the waste of fresh food. They do this by way of an elegant yet simple solution – combining the growers passion to not waste food and their technology, to enable billions of pounds of excess food to reach 1 out of every 4 food pantries nourishing millions of families nationwide. Their solution is to educate and then enable local gardeners to donate that food.

Black Earth Compost

Collection and composting of organic waste in Massachusetts.

Bootstrap Compost

Bootstrap Compost is Greater Boston’s premier year-round residential and commercial food scrap pickup service. Partnering with local farms, Bootstrap diverts thousands of pounds of organic material from landfills every week. As a result, they are harnessing the potential of organic refuse to redefine and empower a local food community. Their farms benefit from their compost in the production of crops while each Bootstrap subscriber receives a portion of cured compost for their own gardening projects. Remaining compost is donated to local schools and community gardens. They consider it thoughtful, sustainable, and community-engineered composting.

Boston Area Gleaners

Boston Area Gleaners organizes volunteer trips to local farms to harvest high-quality fruits and vegetables that would otherwise go to waste. They distribute the nutritious produce to agencies serving families facing food insecurity. 


CERO (Cooperative Energy, Recycling, and Organics) is an award-winning commercial composting company based out of Dorchester, MA. They provide food waste pickup and diversion services for a wide range of commercial clients in the metro Boston area, and transport compostables to local farms where they are returned to the soil and used to support the local agricultural economy. 

City Compost

When trimmings, peels, leftovers, and expired foods go in the garbage valuable nutrients are lost to landfills or incinerators. City Compost works to save these nutrients to return them to the soil as compost through their services. Customers have the option to receive up to 100% of the finished compost back with service for growing at home or it goes off to support local, sustainable farms or community gardens.

City Soil

City Soil develops projects ranging from centralized
in-vessel commercial composting and anaerobic digestion facilities to decentralized compost operations serving community gardens, farms, schools and and residential backyards. City Soil has pioneered the design and construction of educational outdoor classrooms, greenhouses, living roofs and growing systems with many leading nonprofits and environmental organizations. They provide soil, compost, mulch and our specialized 'grow-how' to community gardens, landscapers, agricultural startups, and homeowners.


Community Food Rescue

The Community Food Rescue network of businesses, volunteers and hunger relief organizations is committed to eliminating hunger and food waste. They use innovative technology to find perfectly good food that local businesses would have thrown away, and dispatch volunteers to deliver it to agencies serving people who may not know where their next meal will come from.

Divert, Inc.

Divert was founded to create innovative and efficient solutions toward eliminating waste from the retail industry. Since 2007, they have been helping retail supply chains realize a smaller cost (or see a greater return) on resource recovery efforts, from trackable recycling bins to organics backhauling; from energy generation to innovative solutions for untapped opportunities like waxed cardboard. 

Feeding America

They work with manufacturers, distributors, retailers, food service companies and farmers to gather food before it goes to waste. Each year, they do more to secure these foods for our nationwide network of food banks.

Food Connect

Food Connect's technology helps food rescue and hunger relief efforts in real time so surplus food can get to where it needs to go. Food Donation Connection

Food Donation Connection provides an alternative to discarding surplus wholesome food by linking food service donors with surplus food to local hunger relief agencies. They do this by creating and maintaining an efficient communication and reporting network that links available sources of food to those in need through these existing charitable organizations.  

Food For Free

Food For Free improves access to healthy food within our community by rescuing food that would otherwise go to waste, strengthening the community food system, and creating new distribution channels to reach under-served populations. They envision a future where everyone in our community—regardless of age, income or ability—has consistent access to fresh, healthy, delicious food.

Food Link is a community organization that rescues fresh food, alleviates hunger, and contributes to environmental sustainability.

Food Rescue US

Food Rescue US is committed to ending American food insecurity by directly transferring fresh, usable food that would have otherwise been thrown away from grocers, restaurants, and other food industry sources to food insecure families throughout the U.S.

Food Maven

FoodMaven is a socially conscious, for-profit company founded in 2015 to bring agility and flexibility to the U.S. food system. They leverage an innovative online marketplace and rapid logistics system to capture the millions of pounds of food lost in the system each year and sell it to waiting buyers — or donate it to hungry people. Their goal is to recover the $200 billion in lost revenue caused by wasted food each year by providing buyers and suppliers with a new avenue for sales and purchasing.

Lovin' Spoonfuls Food Rescue

Lovin’ Spoonfuls is a nonprofit food rescue organization based in Boston dedicated to facilitating the rescue and distribution of healthy, fresh food that would otherwise be discarded. They pick up wholesome, perishable food from grocery stores, produce wholesalers, farms and farmers markets, and distribute it to 150 community nonprofits that feed hungry people across Greater Boston and MetroWest.

MEANS Database

MEANS was started with the belief it should be easy for those with excess food to share it with those in need. It didn’t take long to find people who agreed – everyone from Starbucks to The Washington Post. They are now in 48 states and counting, helping divert food from the trash to local emergency feeding services with the ease and speed of the internet.

RecyclingWorks Massachusetts

RecyclingWorks in Massachusetts is a recycling assistance program that helps businesses and institutions maximize recycling, reuse, and food waste diversion opportunities.

Roots Compost

Roots Compost is a curbside community composter. They make it easy for you to compost all your organic waste. And, they will deliver some of the soil back to you when it's done. They operate in Lawrence, Haverhill, Methuen, North Andover, and Andover.

Salvation Farms is a federally recognized, not-for-profit organization driven by a mission to build increased resilience in Vermont’s food system through agricultural surplus management.

Spoiler Alert

Spoiler Alert is a Boston-based, venture-backed technology startup helping food manufacturers, wholesale distributors, and grocery retailers manage unsold inventory more effectively. They offer 1) a business intelligence solution that allows companies to get a better handle on food recovery and waste diversion efforts, as well as 2) a controlled, relationship management portal that facilitates real-time food donations, discounted sales, and/or organic byproduct redistributions. Born out of MIT in June 2015, Spoiler Alert is an alumni of Techstars and MassChallenge (two of the leading startup accelerator programs in the U.S.) and is backed by some of the nation’s leading food, ag and supply chain investors. The company prides itself on its collaborative culture and mission-driven aspirations, and values transparency, personal growth, and results.

The Compost Plant

The Compost Plant collects food scraps from a variety of businesses, including higher education institutions, restaurants, and hospitals. They provide new 48-gallon wheeled compost bins that are color-coordinated to help make waste separation easier for your team. They currently deliver the bulk of the food scraps they collect to Hidden Acres Farm in Medway, MA to be processed into high-quality compost. 

Daily Table

Daily Table is a not-for-profit retail store that offers our community a variety of tasty, convenient and affordable foods that will help you feel and be your best; food that will keep you moving forward, not hold you back. They provide both “grab-n-go” ready to eat meals, and a selection of produce, bread, dairy and grocery items all at prices that will put a smile on your face, and designed to fit within every budget.
